How to pick a makeup academy in Hyderabad without regretting it
Picking a makeup academy is mostly a guessing game. Every website says the same four things: expert faculty, hands-on training, industry certification, placement support. None of that tells you whether you’ll be able to do a bridal face on your own in a month.
So here are the questions actually worth asking. Ask them at every academy you visit, including this one.
Who is actually holding the brush on day fourteen?
Plenty of academies are founded by a well-known artist whose face is on the banner and whose calendar is completely full. You enrol because of them and get taught by someone you’ve never heard of.
Fair question to ask on your first visit: how many of the sessions does the founder personally teach? If the answer is vague, that’s your answer.
At Second Skin, Chakravarthi Kadali teaches. He’s spent 27 years working in the Indian film industry, on sets with Tamannaah, Rakul Preet Singh, Pooja Hegde, Krithi Shetty, Meenakshi Chaudhary and Pragya Jaiswal. The reason that matters isn’t the names. It’s that set work teaches you things a classroom can’t: what happens to a base under a lighting rig at 2pm, how fast you need to be when the shot is waiting, what “it reads fine in person but terrible on camera” actually looks like.
How many faces will you touch?
This is the one that separates good academies from expensive ones. You do not learn makeup by watching. You learn it by doing the same thing on twenty different faces and finding out that the technique you nailed on face four falls apart on face eleven.
Ask for a number. Ask whether you practise on real models or on each other. Ask what happens if your model doesn’t show up.

What happens to your kit money?
Here’s the part nobody warns you about. You finish the course, you’re ready to take clients, and then you find out a working kit costs more than the course did.
A lot of academies solve this by selling you a kit. Some of them make more margin on the kit than on the teaching, which is a slightly awkward incentive.
We give kit guidance instead, built around what you can actually afford right now. If your budget is twelve thousand rupees, you should know which six products deserve it and which forty you can skip until your third paid booking.
Is the certificate worth anything?
Honest answer: a certificate has never once got anyone a job in this industry on its own. Your portfolio does that. A bride looks at your Instagram, not your framed paper.
That said, certification does matter for salon employment, for visa paperwork if you go abroad, and for parents who want to see something official before they fund the course. Second Skin is ISO certified and issues an international certificate on completion, and you leave with portfolio images from your own work.
Can you find the place?
Sounds trivial. It isn’t, when you’re travelling there six days a week for a month.

What the 30 days actually cover
The syllabus starts where every good makeup education starts, which is skin. You learn to read a face before you touch it: the five skin types, how to identify them, and how to prep each one so the base behaves.
Then colour theory, properly, not as a poster on the wall. Undertones, the corrector chart, why the peach one fixes dark circles on Indian skin when the green one makes it worse.
After that it’s base and concealer, face shapes and contouring, and the long block on eyes, which is the biggest chapter for a reason. Brow mapping, eye shapes, eyeshadow placement, cut crease, liner, lashes, kajal.
Then cheeks and lips, airbrush on real equipment, and the part that decides whether your work survives a Hyderabad wedding: setting and finishing. Setting spray versus fixing spray versus hydrating spray, and what to do when it’s 39 degrees and the reception is outdoors.
Come and look before you decide
Genuinely, visit. Watch a session in progress. Talk to whoever is mid-course and ask them what they’d change. Any academy that isn’t comfortable with that is telling you something.
